Last outdoor market day of the season, and I’ll be the clown with the stethoscope (take two beets and call me in the morning - trust me, I’m a doctor – honk!) selling fresh veggies and salads. BUT I’ll still have produce to sell when we start our indoor Holiday Market the weekend after Thanksgiving – 11/26 – in the Bayview Hall from 10am to 2pm, and continue every Saturday until 12/17. In addition to that, I’ll be selling George’s Chocolates (while he’s at the Greenbank Farm doing the same on Sundays), wreaths to hang on your door or over the mantle, and lots of hand-knit winter woolies in wonderful color combinations. This Saturday, Oct. 29 is your last chance to get our whole selection of fresh cheeses for the year.
Please come to the market, check out the costumes and support us. The girls still eat all winter long, but they need to rest their bodies to stay healthy and happy.
As a special this week, we will be offering ½ pound packages Frozen Caprine Cream Chevre for you to store for winter at a discounted rate.
Caprine Cream Chevre freezes (and thaws) beautifully, and as long as it’s protected from freezer-burn there is no difference in flavor or texture (defrosted properly in your refrigerator). Pheta also freezes well. Come and get it!
Cheese is a truly seasonal product. Fresh cheeses will be back in April, but we will have plenty going on before then.

We thank you sincerely for your support this season. Without your support, local agriculture, in fact a local food network couldn’t exist. We count on YOU. Without regular customers, we can’t keep doors open. Think of your local producers and their well-deserved break (and significant loss of income) they have coming. Thanks to www.epicurious.com, this should use a lot of those end-of-season veggies in your garden, or at the farmers’ market:

Autumn Minestrone

2 tablespoons canola or other vegetable oil
1 cup chopped onions
2 garlic cloves, minced or pressed
2 1/2 cups peeled and cubed winter squash (acorn, delicata or buttercup)
2 celery stalks, diced
1/2 cup peeled and diced carrots
2 1/2 cups cubed potatoes
1 teaspoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
6 cups water
4 cups chopped kale
1 1/2 cups cooked or canned cannellini beans (15-ounce can, drained)
Warm the oil in a large soup pot on medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the squash, celery, carrots, potatoes, oregano, salt, pepper, and water and cook for 10 minutes or until the potatoes are almost done. Add the kale and beans and simmer for another 5 to 7 minutes, until the kale is tender and the beans are hot. Serve immediately.

Well, almost it, only 2 more weeks of fresh cheeses and we’re done for the season (we will have some aged cheeses at the Holiday Market!). For those who weren’t aware, cheese is a seasonal product. The time is quickly coming upon us where the working girls’ priority is to make healthy happy babies for us, so we can have fresh delicious milk next season. They have worked hard all year and they deserve the rest. The farmers market draws to an end in unison with our cheesemaking.

You can choose to have cheese through the winter (I’ll give you hints for freezing/storing for your winter delight), or you can just choose to enjoy the last of the fresh cheese now.

I love making cheese with fall milk, the result is always spectacular. Come taste the seasonal difference, you won’t be disappointed!

·         Lemon Dessert Cake: A delicious, moist vanilla cake with a luscious lemon filling inside and on top of the cake. It's topped with a generous amount of our butter streusel which adds another textural layer to a delicious dessert.

·         Mighty Millet: Described by several customers as "the best bread" we bake, this flat round loaf is full of millet seeds and flecked with poppy seeds. It's a rich, moist wonderful bread that makes amazing sandwiches

·         Sonoma Fruit: This is the great fruit-filled loaf we found in Australia earlier this year. Lightly spiced, this whole wheat-spelt bread

Pumpkin time is here again! Fall is the season most people say is their favorite, and no wonder, when these little cuties are great for pies, and also just the right size for displaying on your porch or deck, which will sweeten them even more as the nights get a little cooler.
A new harvest of the beautiful and tasty cheddar cauliflower will be at the market on Saturday, along with lots of tomatoes, basil, peppers, eggplant, zucchini, potatoes, broccoli and all kinds of greens. Your one-stop-shopping market stall!

Our Honeycrisp apple harvest is in full swing and we'll have them at all markets this weekend.

This apple was developed at the University of Minnesota and is likely the most popular apple of all time! It truly is what its name implies--a hint of honey and a very crisp, snappy texture. It's been on the market now for at about 10 years or so and although it's a great tasting apple and just flies off the shelves, it's an extremely difficult apple to grow. It develops a condition called 'bitterpit' which are black spots that lie just beneath the surface of the apple but are highly visible. It's okay to eat a bite containing bitterpit but it makes the apple very unsightly

These are the ever famous Coupeville heirloom bean, grown on Whidbey since the late 1800s. Picking them right now at "Shell Stage" which means you shell them out of their pod, and then have a lovely still soft bean that cooks up in 20 to 30 minutes and is delightfully sweet and creamy. Perfect for Pasta Fagioli with fresh basil, heirloom tomatoes, al dente garlic, cheese from the goats at Little Brown Farm and a loaf of crusty bread from the baker boys at Tree-Top Bakery!Of course, we've also got loads more food including a huge selection of seed grade garlic (just in time for planting!) and food grade garlic (just in time for eating!). The Little Brown Farm has had a busy year! We have introduced 2 new cheeses (Caprizella and Velvet Rose) and 2 styles of yogurt (traditional and creamline) and now we’re at it again. My favorite girl, Velvet Rose has a daughter, Saratoga Satin, named after a lovely white rose. Now we have a fresh, bright white cheese named after Velvet’s girl. Saratoga Satin is a fresh, handpressed cheese that slices and melts well – perfect for cold and warm sandwiches, casseroles, pizza, tacos and more! Saratoga will be very limited and only available intermittently through the end of October, come and sample it this weekend! A cornucopia of vegetables, salads and small fruits adorn the table in time for the long weekend’s festivities! Setting a personal record this year, I’ve managed to keep the snap peas coming in until Labor Day, so you can have fresh peas along with colorful cherry tomatoes in your salads. The salad mix now has two sizes to choose from; 1/2-lb and 1/4-lb quantities to suit your needs.
If you get the cool-weather transplants into the garden in the next week, you’ll have some great fall harvests of kales, chards, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, cabbage and lettuce, and leeks planted out now will be established enough to go through the winter and add a wonderful zing to those early spring soups and stews.

Along with lots of produce each week, I’m bringing plant starts that you can put out in your gardens this month and even early next month for a fall harvest – all the way into November, if we have the same pattern as last year, with the first freeze coming at Thanksgiving. Plant starts include Napa Cabbage, Curly and Romaine Lettuce, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Leeks, Kale, Chard, Tatsoi, Bok Choy and Basil. The Basil can be planted to a larger container, and then brought inside as the nights cool down. A good way to keep a moist environment around a basil plant is to stand the container in a saucer filled with pebbles and water. When watering basil plants, use warm water so as not to slow or stop the growth process.

Summer crops are coming in now, and fresh basil is a wonderful addition to almost any meal! Pick up a bag at the stall on Saturday, but come early, because it sells out fast. If you don’t plan to use it right away, store it by placing a damp paper towel over the top leaves in the bag and keep in a cool place. NEVER REFRIGERATE BASIL, it hates the cold temperatures in the refrigerator, and will turn black very quickly.
Tomatoes are also coming in, and there’ll be boxes of bright yellow cherries, and bags of plump red salad tomatoes. See you under the big tree at 10am!

My zucchini plants are pumping out lots of wonderful yellow beauties, and some of them are growing bigger than the size I like to bag up, so I’m selling them as singles, and you get to take home more poundage for your money that way! As long as the shine is still on the skin, the taste is the same as the smaller ones. When you can’t use them right away, rub a little cooking oil on the skins and they’ll last for weeks unrefrigerated, out of direct sunlight. If you choose to cook them and freeze them, they can be thawed to thicken soups and stews in the winter – yum!

Perfect wines for summer sipping! They both pair wonderfully with the summer food offerings at the market. Pam’s Place Produce and Plants will have warm-season plant starts beginning this Saturday. There will still be cool-season starts (and in our climate, these can be planted all the way through the end of June for a later harvest), but with a little protection on clear/frosty nights, the warm-season starts can be put out now to grow a good root system and support a heavy crop of fruit later this year.

That's your guarantee that (with one or two exceptions that will be announced well in advance) you can count on finding us at the market every Saturday from now through the end of October. It's not always pretty outside when we leave for the market Saturday morning --- but this is our pledge.... we'll be there. So, you can rely on finding the freshest breads, pastries and cakes at the TTB booth every Saturday. And remember: make sure you place a pre-order for Mother's Day.

JThis Saturday starts the 2011 season of the Bayview Farmers Market. Join us each Saturday from 10-2 (rain or shine) for some of the best South Whidbey has to offer. This year we are happy to have seven new vendors this year.

Pam's Place Produce

Pam’s Place Produce will once again be under the big tree this Saturday! This is the last day this month for you to drop off empty, light-weight plant containers for me to fill with soil, fertilizer and lettuce or herb plants. All the veggie and herb starts are still the same low price, and planting weather is perfect now for cool-season crops, multiple types and colors of the following veggies...

Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, chard, onions, leeks, bok choy, lettuce,tatsoi and mizuna (mild mustard), chives, French sorrel, cilantro, Greek oregano, French tarragon,parsley, and mint.

Lots of greens are coming out of my greenhouses, and there are always complimentary recipes available on the market table for a little cooking inspiration.

Well, it's that time again: The Bayview Farmers Market re-opens for another season Saturday at Bayview Corner. The opening bell rings at 10 a.m. and we'll be on hand to begin our fifth year. Come and sample our breads and pastries. This happens to be the last week of the month, so it's Kringle week right off the bat. You'll also find some great Aussie treats we picked up on our trip "down under" earlier this year. There's fruit-filled, slightly spiced Sonoma Fruit Loaf, coconut-oatmeal Anzac Biscuits and chocolate coconut Lamingtons.

Freshly picked Island Rhubarb will be featured in pies at the booth, Pie for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on opening day, April 30th. Heading into her 10th year at the Bayview Farmers' Market, Shirlee Read, mistress of pies, will also have her trademark frozen savory pies, Down Home Chicken and Classic Meat, along with quiches, cream pies and a variety of made-from-scratch fruit pies.

Last Market Of The Season!!!

This week is our traditional Candy Scramble at noon for the kids, and our vendors will be dressed in Halloween costumes to help set the mood.

There's something special about October markets --- they're the iffiest as far as weather's concerned: Last week we barely got the canopies down before the rain started pouring. Even so, late season markets have a great vibe: Most customers are locals... out to make sure they get the best of the year's bounty.

For this last outdoor market of the year, Savory Pies will be the focus at the booth, Pie for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. These pies serve 4 and come frozen so you can bake them to eat hot out of the oven. The selections will be Down Home Chicken, Classic Meat, or Italian Sausage and Roasted Vegetable. All pies are made-from-scratch. Of course there will also be a selection of baked fruit pies, pieces of pie and quiches.

Willowood Farms

“It’s last market of the season so don’t forget to stock up the pantry with Willowood Farm’s fall harvest bounty. Winter squash and pumpkins, potatoes – including great deals on 10 lb storage bags, garlic, onions and locally grown dry beans and grains! Come for the locally famous Rockwell Bean – Whidbey Island’s very own heirloom dry bean. Columbia Beach Barbecue

Customers of Columbia Beach Barbeque will receive a complimentary chocolate cupcake Saturday at the Bayview Farmers Market as a “thank you” for those who supported a recent fundraiser to pay funeral expenses for Dick “Papa” Trefts.

Trefts, who was instrumental in the creation and development of Columbia Beach BBQ, died September 5, the day after the fundraiser at the Bayview Farmers Market. Proceeds from the sale of items at the Columbia Beach Barbeque and donations at other booths at the market that day were presented to Trefts after the sale. “Papa was overwhelmed and unable to express his feelings in words.”

“It is truly amazing to see our community, along with total strangers, pull together during tough times to help someone in need, and you definitely did just that for our beloved “Papa,” his family said.

Sicilian raisin, dark rye, Genzano, plus an incredible almond cake

We're racing against the clock to schedule everyone's favorite items before the market ends October 30.

This week we've got a great new bread we just couldn't wait a year to introduce: Sicilian Raisin. Made with semolina flour, the crusty loaf is filled with regular and golden raisins and candied lemon peel, and a spicy twist from toasted anise seed.

We'll also be baking Fromage et Lardon, Genzano (Country Italian), and Cracked Wheat Sourdough. This week's rye will be Dunkles Roggenbrot, our delicious dark, dark rye bread that makes the best cheese sandwich you've ever tasted.

Our special cake this week is French Almond (photo at left) --- three layers of dense almond cake sandwiched with apricot jam, iced in our own Italian buttercream, enrobed in white truffle.

Danish Kringle, Spent Grain, and Sauerkraut Rye this Saturday

Another month has flown by and that means it's time again for Danish Kringle (we bake it the last weekend of the month). We'll have the flaky pastry (above) for sale at Saturday's market along with a collection of tasty breads. This week we're happy to bake a new loaf --- Rusty Pail Ale Spent Grain Wheat. Whidbey home brewer Rob Lewis has kindly contributed spent grain from a recent batch of his signature ale. The barley grain adds a nutty/sweet goodness to a naturally fermented wheat bread. This week we're also baking Sauerkraut Rye (requested by several folks who love the moist bread), Sunflower Wheat, Herb Pain Rustique, Buckwheat Baton and Cracked Wheat Sourdough.

Crisp and tangy Shamrock Apples are the earliest apple variety harvested at our orchard. Excellent fresh out of hand and in pies and sauces, Shamrocks can be a good substitute for Granny Smith Apples. They are very delicate so please handle yours with care and store in the refrigerator to keep them nice and crunchy.

A versatile fruit, apples are equally delicious when used in drinks like Apple Ginger Mint Iced Tea, chopped and sautéed for Apple Zucchini Crostini and baked into Apple Dumplings or Baked Apple Donuts.

This is the first year we have been able to harvest our Honey Blaze Nectarines, a red-skinned variety with firm, mild and sweet yellow flesh. This variety can be eaten firm or soft. If you like them on the softer side, let them sit at room temperature for a day or two until they are just right and then eat or store in the refrigerator
